He-Man, Master of the Universe

Building muscle for me was because of eighties cartoon legend “He-Man – Master of the Universe”. Childish and silly I know, but I was four. He-Man was my first introduction to health, fitness and bodybuilding. He was 6 foot, tanned and had muscle upon muscle – in fact that was his main thing, being big and strong.

The reason I mention this is because this is a vastly misunderstood area, not only in how to actually do it but why you should do it at all. My reason was purely cosmetic; I wanted to be a big strong superhero. Mostly though I was small, weak and scrawny. For many people this improved physical apperance is enough. Having big muscles is aesthetically pleasing and physically very impressive – just as any professional wrestler idolised by millions will tell you.

Building muscle doesn’t mean you will end up looking like a huge muscular guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger (unless of course you want to), it doesn’t happen over night and you can stop anytime you are comfortable with your body and maintain your gains indefinitely. This applies to women too – you won’t get huge manly muscles because you don’t have the same hormones men do. All that will happen is that you will build lean muscle tissue just like the top models, dancers and celebrities.

If you want to learn more about how you can build muscle check out the articles below, but for now I’d like to introduce to why you should be building muscle regardless of your age, sex, or physical condition.

The Benefits of Building Muscle are enormous. Rather than present you with a long winded and boring essay on the science behind this I’m going to briefly outline the major factors of why this should be your top priority for your health.

1.) Lean Muscle makes you stronger. Being stronger is a fundamental key to living a free and enjoyable life. Many people today struggle with basic everyday task like climbing the stairs, carrying the shopping moving furniture playing with their kids and basically just getting around. Building muscle means you can function with greater ease. As you become stronger everything becomes relatively lighter and simple tasks that were once hard are rendered easy. If you are involved in sports be in it golf to UFC Mixed Martial Arts it’s a must.

2.) Building Muscle Burns is THE secret to weight loss! – I’ll go into more detail in the weight loss section but here’s the brief explanation Lean Muscle tissue requires 75 kcals to sustain it, whereas fat only requires three. This means that if you only add 5lbs of muscle you can burn an additional 20-25 lbs of fat a year doing nothing!

3.) Building Muscle makes you look better! Muscle identifies your body and enhances its physical appeal. Men look like men when they are muscular and women look like women when they are toned. The reason is because the muscle of men emphasises the male structure, broad shoulders and a large chest. The muscle of women emphasises the female structure accentuating the natural curves of the body. Fat is shapeless and smudges the picture covering up the very parts of you that make you look like a million bucks.

4.) Lowers your Cholesterol and decreases the risk of Heart Disease. That’s right, building muscle promotes the release of good HDL and decreases he amount of bad LDL in your blood stream. This lowers your risk of heart disease among others such as Kidney Failure etc…

5.) Lowers risk of Osteoporosis - Exercise produces more HDL (good cholesterol while reducing the bad LDL cholesterol. This reduces among other things your chance of heart disease.
